About the brewery...
A rule of St Benedict states "You are only a monk when you live by the work of your hands". Hence Trappist monasteries throughout the world craft many goods, including beer. The Orval monastery was built in the early ’30’s and is was manned by lay people, whilst the monks themselves produce bread, cheese, honey and confectionery. The brewery profit is now distributed to local charitable and social organisations.
About the beer...
Orval is dissimilar to other Trappist beers, being much lighter and dryer in character. The brewing process is in itself highly distinctive, and gives Orval its unique character. Dry and very lively on the palate, the hugely complex flavours are immediately apparent, with the malt character lingering in the background. Then the remarkable hop presence makes itself felt and the whole personality of Orval is revealed.
